Carroll Barlow, Crazy Quilt - Carroll Barlow apprenticed to
master quilter, Lucy Varner, in order to learn her old style of crazy
quilt embroidery. This example shows many of the traditional embroidery
stitches that were passed to Carroll through the apprenticeship project.

Master artist Dorothy Thompson (top) with apprentice, JoAnn Gardner,
work at a loom in Dorothy’s "loom barn." Dorothy has taught
numerous persons to weave including two people within the West Virginia
Folk Art Apprenticeship Program. Dorothy was nominated for a National
Heritage Fellowship by the Augusta Heritage Center and received that
prestigious award in 2000.

Master artist Tom Lynch (right), works with Lonnie Bender at the old
Linger Chair Shop in Upshur County. Tom himself apprenticed to chair
makers of the Linger family over twenty-five years ago. Bender has
recently refurbished the old chair shop, and Tom is showing him techniques
in the same shop and on the same old machinery on which he learned.

Joe Gainer works with apprentice, Rose Miller, in the craft of white
oak basketry. Rose had some basket weaving skills, but had not used
white oak. Through the apprenticeship, Rose learned how to apply her
skills to working with white oak, the most common traditional material
in West Virginia.

Joe Herrmann works with master fiddler, Israel Welch, at Israel’s
mountain top home in Mineral County. Israel retains a large repertoire
of traditional tunes from the eastern panhandle country. An accomplished
fiddler himself, Joe is now passing those tunes to others.
