Irish/Celtic Week
celebrates its 28th year with the very best in Celtic
crafts, folklore, music and dance. Augusta’s Irish/Celtic Week has
had an enormous impact on the quality of Irish and Cape Breton
traditional
music
and dance
in the U.S. The classes are intense and music sessions in the wee
hours are legendary.
Irish/Celtic Week
Coordinator Joanie Madden has
chosen extraordinary master musicians and teachers for the week.
These include: Martin Quinn
(button accordion); Mirella Murray
(piano accordion);
Angelina Carberry (tenor banjo); Myron Bretholz
(bodhran); Edel
Fox (concertina); Donny Golden
(step dance); Tony Ryan (set
dance); Patrick Ourceau, Yvonne Kane, and Liz
Kane (fiddle); Kevin Crawford
(flute); Donal Clancy
(guitar); Jem Moore (hammered
dulcimer); Eileen Gannon
(harp); Kathleen Boyle
(piano);
Dan Milner (vocals); Robbie
O'Connell (vocal performance);
Cillian Vallely (Uilleann pipes); Brendan
Dolan and, of course,
Joanie Madden (whistle);
and John
Skelton (flute and
ceili band mini-course).
Students choose one subject and
one instructor for intensive classes that meet both
morning and afternoon. All classes (except dance and vocals)
are intended for
those who can already play their instrument to some extent and are
ready to start learning Irish or Celtic style, technique, and
repertoire.
In the evenings
participants may join lively sessions or swap ballads. Less
experienced students are offered
encouragement in “slow sessions” led by the staff. Three optional
evening mini-courses will complement the week's theme:
John Skelton will teach Ceili
Band, Jim Flanagan will teach
Irish Songs and Ballads, and Myron
Bretholz will teach bodhran. Dances will follow both
the Tuesday and Thursday Irish/Celtic public concerts.
To register,
specify “Irish/Celtic Week,” your instructor and class.
