Joe Gainer, a native of Elkins, West Virginia, operates a small business called Cherry Fork Baskets, crafting Appalachian white oak baskets in the traditional style of the region. He studied white oak basketry extensively under Rachael Nash Law as well as Cindy Taylor and Ike Yakim, and is a master artist for the West Virginia Folk Arts Apprenticeship program. His baskets are known for their clean construction and fine detail. Students will split, weave and finish white oak baskets.
