Introduction to Felting
Sara Burnett

This is an introductory felt class on the techniques of making felt from wool. Felt is a non-woven fabric which is made by a process of exposing wool to heat, pressure, agitation, moisture and soap. We will lay out wool roving ( from Merino, Finn and Romney sheep) in a special way on plastic bubble wrap, and by adding soap, water, and hand-rolling we will make pieces of hand felt.

Day One: Make a hat around a plastic resist and add surface design.

Day Two: Lay out and design a unique scarf using silk fabric, wool and rainbow dyed silks and wools.

Day Three: Felt a small bag around a resist with a pocket, shoulder strap and felted button closure using fine Merino wools.

Day Four:  Needle Felting:  Either make a landscape or a small sculpted figure.

Day Five: Continue Needle Felting and review the techniques that we worked with during the week and share each student's work.

The instructor will bring all the materials for felting. There will be a materials fee of $75 payable to the instructor.

Instructor will bring lists of sources for materials and list of books about felting.
