2008 Augusta Class Description

Week 5
Dance Week
Visible Rhythms
: Shim Sham Shimmy, Motown, and More
Ann Kilkelly

The Shim Sham Shimmy, an exuberant popular group dance, originated in the 1930's. Pre-dating the "electric slide," it was performed at the end of every evening's social dance in Harlem and all over the country.  It has remained a favorite group dance and has is known world wide as the "tap anthem." One of the great tap dancers of the 30's and 40's, Cholly Atkins, used tap moves to find the "musical hooks" for the Motown moves he created for most of the most famous groups -- The Temptations, The Supremes, Gladys Knight and the Pips, and many others. In this high energy class, we will learn how these wildly popular forms connect by learning two very well known dances and satisfy that itch to be a backup singer and dancer. All levels welcome.
