2008 Augusta Class Letter

Week 4
Bluegrass Week
Beginning Bluegrass
Dobro/Reso Guitar
Jimmy Heffernan

Greetings Students,

I want to take a moment and give you some idea of what to expect from my Beginning Dobro class this year at Augusta.

This class will cover material and technique from the ground up. If you never played a note of music or never saw a Dobro before, you've come to the right place. On the other hand, if you have been at it several years and feel you want to make sure you're doing everything correctly, or want some new things to work on, you're also in the right place. We'll be learning some music theory as it relates to your actual playing needs. For example, you'll learn major scales and how to use them over the chord progressions that make up songs and fiddle tunes. You'll be learning to play music, not just reading tabs. Having said that, everything will be tabbed-out for reference later.

We'll be covering several arrangements of songs to be determined by the class. I intend for you to come out of the week with enough information to practice for the whole year.

You'll need a Dobro (Round or Square neck, set up for lap style playing with the strings raised up off the neck). You'll need a slide bar, two metal finger picks and one plastic thumb pick.

You are welcome to record the proceedings. There will be lots of one-on-one with the students to take care of individual needs.

Come with tons of questions! If you have any questions about the class or your instrument or whatever, just drop me a line at jimmyheffernan@comcast.net and hopefully I'll fix you up.

We're gonna have a great time!  I'm looking forward to spending the week with you.
