2008 Augusta Class Letter

Week 4
Bluegrass Week
Beginning Bluegrass Fiddle

Andrew Van Norstrand

Hello, everyone. I’m so excited to be teaching at the Augusta Heritage Center this summer.  My class will focus on the basics of learning to play fiddle. If you’ve never had a fiddle in your hands before, then this is the class for you.  If you’re just starting out and have issues with intonation, timing or anything else, this is still the class for you.

We’ll begin by talking about how the instrument works and I’ll give some suggestions for developing and improving your technique.  We will go over some common major scales and arpeggios.  We will probably learn a few standard tunes and might talk a bit about the use of bowing, double stops and other stylistic elements of Bluegrass fiddling, but I do not plan to spend much time on improvisation or working out breaks.  I teach using ‘call and response’ for the most part which means we may also work on learning and playing by ear if this is unfamiliar for anyone.

You need to bring your own fiddle and bow. A recording device of some kind is encouraged but I will have some sheets to hand out as well.  This will not be a fast-paced class but I do hope everyone who comes has a desire to learn and participate.  Feel free to contact me with any questions.

Looking forward to seeing you this summer!
