Augusta
understands that the future of traditional arts lies with our
youth. Numerous workshop offerings are
geared toward the 8 to 20
age group. We have a youth scholarship
program with an application
process that allows numerous younger folks
to come and participate
(download scholarship
application form).
In
Folk Arts for
Kids
classes (ages 8-12), themes vary, but a typical week
includes a
daily schedule
of crafts, dance,
games, and other physical activity, and at least
1-hour a day of music, such as “Finding Your Instrument” or
singing.
Another class, “Roots
and Rhythm for Teens,”
(ages 13-20) is a dance-oriented offering that is geared specifically for
teens. With a talented staff of four, this week-long class teaches
movement and dance for pure enjoyment and personal expression in a
non-competitive
atmosphere. Teenagers will explore their creative
potential through dance, improvisational movement and a mutual
sharing of ideas. The folk traditions of Appalachian flatfooting,
step dance, African dance and hambone will make this life-changing
experience unforgettable.
The Mountain Institute is working
with Augusta this summer to offer kids another reason to spend
time with family in Elkins.
Appalachian
Adventure (ages 9-13) allows kids to experience
outdoor education out and about each day in lush green Randolph
County guided by The Mountain Institute’s practiced staff and
environmental adventure curriculum.
Children and
teens taking regular adult-level classes pay full tuition and are
expected to exhibit an adult level of participation.
