This year’s October Old-Time Week staff will be packed with musical
talent and will include several West Virginians, some Virginians,
and a fiddler from Tennessee. This year will also signal a change
in the way the week is structured. Students will sign up for
a particular instrument at a particular level with a designated
instructor.
They
will work with this instructor every morning
and during one afternoon session for two days, and then other
staff will
rotate
in to teach that class on the final three days of the week.
The main fiddle instructors are Erynn
Marshall and Dave Bing (both back by popular demand) along
with Mike Bryant, who will
make his first appearance at October Old-Time Week. Advanced
fiddlers will work with Mike on the first two days. They will
then work with the other fiddlers on staff Wednesday through
Friday. Likewise, intermediate players will start with Dave Bing
and then work with others and Erynn Marshall will do the same
with beginning players. Andy Fitzgibbon will host some late week
fiddle classes as well. We think this will allow students to
have access to more teaching and playing styles to their advantage.
Guitar players will start out with Carl
Jones for two days,
and then also work with other instructors. Banjo players are
offered two levels, beginning with Pam Lund (beginning to intermediate)
and Bob Smakula (intermediate to advanced). They will be in their
classes two days, and will then work with other banjo players
on staff.
Rounding out
the week, our annual Fiddlers’
Reunion presents a weekend of unforgettable
performances by some of West Virginia’s finest old-time fiddlers.
