New class information for 2009
is not yet available (except 2009 dates). The information below
shows the classes and instructors that were available in 2008.

Vocal Week is becoming a beloved Augusta institution. Perhaps no
other form of expressive culture captures the essence of our lives
better than singing the melodies, harmonies, and poetry of this
venerable art form. Come raise your voice with ours!
Vocal Week coordinator, Flawn Williams,
has again put together an extraordinarily talented staff of caring
individuals who sing from the heart. Old-time ballads, Gospel
songs, British folksongs, spirituals, honky tonk, new songs, old
songs, and even medieval sounds will enthrall you. Taking good
care of your voice will be emphasized, with classes in voice
technique plus
vocal warm ups offered every morning. From those
gentle early morning warm ups to late night song swaps, singers
will delight in the variety and scope of this year's Vocal Week.

Students may work in a range of cultures with
World Music Harmonies
taught by
Elise Witt,
Brian Peters
on British Ballads and Songs, or with
Emily Eagen
[bottom right photo]
on Medieval Singing. Or they may choose from such American
traditions as
Joe Newberry
[bottom left photo]
and
Valerie Mindel's
[top right photo]
Country Siblings class,
Gail Hatton
on Appalachian Ballads and Songs and songs of Maggie Hammons, or
Valerie Mindel
doing Honky Tonk songs.
Ethel Caffie-Austin
[middle right photo]
and
Delnora Roberts
will teach African-American Gospel Chorus and Solos, while
Charles Williams
[top left photo]
will help take care of your voice (and no doubt add to other
aspects of the Vocal Week offerings!).
Kate
Long
[middle left photo]
will teach songwriting, and will also offer support for the “confidence- impaired” singers.
Rhiannon Giddens
will share a wide array of songs from old blues to Scots mouth
music.
Flawn Williams
will lead “Ad Hoc Harmonies,” an exploration of vocal
improvisation.
Judy Cook
will be on hand to lead workshops and jams.
Those at the beginning level can get tips on creating simple
harmonies, and experienced harmony singers get a challenging
workout. Learn how to care for your voice and expand your vocal
range. You may also choose to take a Dance Week or Old-Time Week
class in the afternoon. Each day late afternoon bonus sessions
offer interesting choices that aren’t
available in other sessions. Evenings
offer mini-classes, concerts, song swaps, activities for teens,
dances, jam sessions, and a student showcase. After hours we liven
up the Ice House and other campus locations, singing everything
from ballads to doo-wops.
To register, specify “Vocal Week.”
You will choose your classes at the Sunday night orientation session,
after meeting the instructors and hearing more specifics about the classes they are offering.
